There were three Americans that competed in the Veterans category: Peter Alegi, Varant Kurkeyerian, and Bryan Arnold. For these players, the Vets category was a long awaited and long anticipated tournament. Many hours of training went into preparation. Many matches back home to get fit and prepared were played. These players used their accumulated personal assets to take on the best Vets in the world.
Peter Alegi earned a great win against Jose Luis Sanchez of Gibraltar; Peter won 2-0. He also had very competitive matches against Charles Aquilina of Malta, and Eric Naszalyi of France. Peter lost to Charles, 0-3 and lost to Eric, 1-2. Peter finished the event with three points, and three goals scored.
Varant Kurkeyerian was drawn to a very difficult group with Eric Threis of Belgium, Edin Mulasmajic of Germany, and Rudi Peterschnigg of England. Varant’s opponents were in form and at the top of their game. Varant lost to Eric, 0-4; Edin, 0-6; and finally Rudi, 0-6.
Bryan Arnold was in a group with the great Italian Veteran, Patrizio Lazzaretti as well as Manfred Pawlica of Austria and Richard Berliaque of Gibraltar. Bryan lost each match and was unable to score. He lost to Patrizio, 0-6; Manfred, 0-1; and Richard, 0-1.
